The research group on Artificial Intelligence and Media Philosophy (in German: Künstliche Intelligenz und Medienphilosophie, KIM) that has been inaugurated at the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design in 2018 is a space where students of art, philosophy and computer science meet and explore the impact of AI on society and culture.
Whereas AI is emerging as hegemonic paradigm for the automation of complex creative tasks (from self-driving cars to text translation, from music composition to market predictions), a critique and ethics of AI is still missing. Confronting the rapid rise of AI industries in Germany and in Baden-Württemberg, local cultural and educational institutions should take the role of exploring the impact of these technologies and, more importantly, their limits and fallacies.
AI is already shaping our culture and society, as AI applications are invisibly becoming part of our everyday life. Despite its mathematical complexity, AI is not a ‘black box’ to be left to experts only, instead it can be understood as a collective technology that ultimately has to be explained to the whole society: especially since AI is growing with data and knowledge produced by society itself.
With an approach situated between Science and Technology Studies (STS) and media theory, KIM integrates theory and practical experiments around AI. At the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design, artists and designers work together with scientists and philosophers to unpack the mysteries of AI, also with the mission to counteract apocalyptic and technophobic view on AI (a growing form of obscurantism that is common in the academic as well as in business world).
