The research group KIM at the University of Arts and Design Karlsruhe calls for declaration of interest in a project coordination position (1 year, renewable up to 3 years) within the AI Forensics project funded by the Volkswagen Stiftung program “AI and the Society of the Future.”

The KIM research group at the Hochschule für Gestaltung Karlsruhe is seeking to appoint a project coordinator for the AI Forensics research project and consortium. The position will be held for the project period of 1 year automatically renewable up to 3 years. The remuneration is based on the provisions of the collective agreement for the public service of Baden-Württemberg and depends on the qualification of the applicant, ranging from 50% WHK to 50% TVL-E13. Starting date: as soon as possible between 16.10.2022 and 1.1.2023.

The AI Forensics research project, funded by the Volkswagen Foundation, will develop a new sociotechnical framework for the analysis and critique of AI systems, including an interdisciplinary methodology between critical AI studies and Explainable AI. The project features equally technical, social and theoretical research components. Part of the project is the development and deployment of an AI forensics toolkit for the investigation of large training datasets (e.g. face recognition datasets), trained models (e.g. issues of algorithmic bias), and real world applications (e.g. predicting policing), that will accompanied by social and theoretical investigations of its applications.

The appointee will join an interdisciplinary research team composed of humanities scholars and computer scientists based at Cambridge University, Durham University, University of California Santa Barbara, Kassel University, and Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design.  As a project coordinator, the appointee will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the project and will be in charge of the administrative and organisational tasks. This includes the coordination between the consortium partners, the management of workflows and deadlines, organisation and coordination of meetings and events for the research project as well as the assistance in the final evaluation process. The ideal candidate should be based in Germany and willing to travel to follow the consortium activities.

Recruitment requirements

  • Degree (MA) in Media Studies or similar university subject, e.g. Philosophy, History, Digital Humanities, Cultural Studies, Visual Studies, etc.
  • Excellent planning skills and ability to interface with large institutions (e.g. ONU, Amnesty International, etc.). 
  • Experience in project management and budget administration.
  • Willingness for project-oriented work in an interdisciplinary and international team.
  • Fluency in English and German.
  • Excellent interpersonal, intercultural and communication skills.
  • Good computer skills in content management systems (WordPress), mailing lists, social media, web design, and server administration is required.

Tasks

  • Provide proactive and efficient project support and coordination to all members of the Projects team. 
  • Coordinate and conduct regular internal meetings to ensure that the goals and objectives are met. 
  • Oversight over the execution of the work plan and deadlines.
  • Organise and coordinate events for research project, including venue and catering arrangements, speaker and attendee liaison, preparation and distribution of papers, reproduction of materials. 
  • Arrange travel and accommodation for members of the team and project partners and stakeholders, including flights.
  • Coordinate the dissemination and communication activities of the research project to ensure all project news and outcomes are shared with the public. This includes proof reading of material and sending newsletters through social media.
  • Preparation of the final evaluation process.
