Few remember that the term ‘ecology’ [Ökologie] was invented by the German illustrator Ernst Haeckel, as the study of the relation between the organism and its environment. Michail Rybakov seems to take this as inspiration to merge organism with the environment: in these illustrations made with the neural style transfer technique, in fact, Haeckel’s unicellular organisms merge with the geological landscape itself and describe an environment of higher complexity. Once again, neural networks help to hallucinate disciplinary and ontological borders.
